This privacy notice will inform you as to how we look after your personal data if the EEF has identified you (or your organisation and you as a key contact) as a potential supporter; or if your organisation has made a donation to the EEF and you are one of the key contacts for that organisation. This page should be read in conjunction with our privacy notice main page which covers information relevant to anyone whose data is used by the EEF.
Purpose and lawful basis for processing
The purpose for conducting prospect research is to support the EEF’s fundraising and supporter engagement in fulfilment of our charitable mission to improve educational outcomes for children and young people, particularly those facing disadvantage. Prospects may be private individuals or individuals working for organisations, such as trusts and foundations and corporates, which have made donations to educational or related causes.
The lawful basis we rely on to process your personal data is article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR, which allows us to process personal data when it is necessary for the purposes of our legitimate interests.
We only use information from credible sources in the public domain, as well as volunteers, such as our Board of Trustees, to identify individuals who may be able to support the EEF or to introduce us to others. This includes using contact details provided by The Education Company (see their privacy policy).
We may collect the following types of personal information on individuals: job title(s), affiliated organisation(s), previous charity affiliations/donations, education, career history, relationships/networks, and relevant interests, all based on publicly-available sources.
We collect such data for the following reasons:
- to identify new potential donors who may have an affinity to the EEF’s mission but with whom we are not already in touch. In certain circumstances, this means that we might collect personal data about you before we meet you to understand whether it would be appropriate to approach you as potential donor;
- to tailor our communications and make the most appropriate requests to our current supporters, and
- to conduct due diligence on all major gifts in accordance with our legal and regulatory obligations and internal risk management policies and procedures. This is to safeguard our reputation and to help us mitigate any associated risk, so if you choose to opt-out of this, we may not be able to process your donation.
How long personal information will be stored for depends on the personal information in question and what it is being used for, as well as whether there is any legal or regulatory requirement for retaining the personal information.
For instance, we hold personal information relating to:
- Supporter transaction and interaction history indefinitely in order to be able to track and report on the volume and nature of interactions with the EEF over time. (Supporters are individuals or key contact working for organisations, such as trusts and foundations and corporates, who have had contact with EEF in a capacity which supports our outcomes for children.)
- Legacy pledgers. If you indicate that you’d like to leave us a legacy gift, we will retain personal information indefinitely in recognition of the relevance of that information up to the fulfilment of the legacy pledge.
- Philanthropy and partnership supporters. If you provide EEF with partnership or philanthropic giving, we will retain personal data indefinitely in recognition of the long-term interactions with these supporters.
As we are processing your personal data for our legitimate interests as stated above, you have the right to object to our processing of your personal data. There are legitimate reasons why we may refuse your objection, which depend on why we are processing it.
For more information on your rights, please see‘Your rights’on our privacy notice main page.
